In honor of Abraham Lincoln’s birth month, as well as the 150^th anniversary of the 2^nd year of the American Civil War, a good book to know about is The Lincolns: a Scrapbook Look at Abraham and Mary by Candace Fleming. The scrapbook format is inviting, and allows readers to take in a little or a lot, in chronological order or here and there, with satisfaction. The book is a window into the lives of some of the most famous and important people in American history, so readers can see their human side as well as the reasons they had such an impact on the course of the country. Newspaper clippings, photos, cartoons, notes (including those in Lincoln's hand) and text depict the personal lives of the Lincoln Family and the tumultuous time in history in which they lived. I also enjoyed reading of the connection the author has with her subject. Included in the “scraps” is Mary Lincoln’s recipe for Abe’s favorite cake--it’s delicious! For anyone celebrating Lincoln’s life this month--even if you don’t make the cake--take a look at the book!

This new series is recommended for students in 5^th grade and up, and might be a fun novel to read with a group.

It's the 1950's and Ruth's Daddy just bought a 1952 Buick! Ruth, her Mama and Daddy will be driving it from their home in Chicago to her Grandma's house in Alabama! The trip starts out pleasant, but as they continue their drive the family encounters white only restrooms and hotels. It's hard for Ruth's family to find places to rest and eat. Ruth feels homesick but a friend they meet along the way tells them to watch out for Esso service stations. When Daddy later stops at an Esso service station, he buys a copy of The Negro Motorist Green Book. "It lists places in lots of states where we would be welcome to sleep, eat, shop, get a haircut - and all kinds of information besides." The story ends on a high note and includes a full page history of The Negro Motorist Green Book.

This book would make a great educational read aloud at anytime, but especially during African American History Month. Both children and adults will likely learn some facts about the Jim Crow era. Highly recommended for grades 3-6.

This picture book surely lives up to its name. Not only is its story about a square, it is square! The book's shape is just one of many creative details that make this book so delightful. And it is just about perfect, too, with a clever but simple story, a good message, and colorful, playful, beautiful illustrations by artist and author Michael Hall. A perfect square is happy being just that, square and perfect. But when it is suddenly cut, torn, and otherwise changed, the square finds new happiness in adapting to each of the changes and transforming into other beautiful, more complex shapes.

Its gentle adventure would make it good for reading to preschoolers and up; its imaginative illustrations, and message of adaptation to change, would make it ideal for use in an art class, book discussion, or for inspirational reading for all ages. While an original work, it is in the same spirit as the works of Eric Carle, Leo Lionni and Lois Ehlert. Another wonderful, visually stunning book by Michael Hall is My Heart is Like a Zoo.

Greg Heffely is back in the fifth installment of Jeff Kinney's popular Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. Greg is concerned about the upcoming holidays. He doesn't really like the idea of Santa watching him when he is sleeping and awake, and he really doesn't like that he has to be on his best behavior for an entire month. But we all know that Greg can't stay out of trouble, which is what makes the series so enticing.

On his first capital venture to make some money for his Net Krittelz pet, Greg finds himself $20 in the hole for his brilliant idea to make $5. To make matters worse, Greg becomes a fugitive as he tries to hide under the radar from the principal and the police for 'accidentally' vandalizing the school during one of his schemes. Cabin Fever is another excellent addition to this humorous and popular series.

Unfortunately for Delly, if she does one more thing wrong, she’s going to get sent off to a school for troubled kids. To avoid more outbursts, Delly first tries counting in her head when she’s upset. Then, her attention turns to a new girl in school, Ferris. Ferris is a selective mute with very specific personal boundaries that include her not wanting anyone to touch her and “no cuss”. Delly is fascinated with the quiet solitude of Ferris and her quiet connection with animals and nature. Their strange friendship becomes one of mutual rehabilitation as Delly learns to quiet her spirit and Ferris learns to fight for herself.

The well-known adult author John Grisham has written a series for the tween audience. The first book of the Theodore Boone series is about a thirteen-year-old kid lawyer. He spends more time at the county court house than at his home or school. Theodore Boone knows all the judges, lawyers, bailiffs, and even the custodians at the court house.

In “Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer,” Theo Boone the only son of two lawyers solves his classmates problems and gives them “legal” advice. Among the classmates he helps includes a boy who is worried about his family losing their home, helping another girl reclaim her dog from the pound, and also solving a crime.

The main plot of the book involves a murder trial in which Theo gets seats for his government class to observe the trial. A man is accused of his wife’s murder. Theo does some detective work and finds evidence that may affect the trial’s outcome. An illegal immigrant has some information but fears he will be deported if he comes forward with what he knows.

The story moves along quickly and keeps the reader interested. The characters are likeable and easy to relate to.

The reading level is for children ages 8 through 12 years old.

As Logan struggles with his dilemma, Grandfather, in his lucid moments, proves to be a clever and creative confidant; as Grandpa struggles with his memory loss, Logan comes to his aid, and the two form a bond. Both Logan’s and his grandpa’s troubles go from bad to worse so often that it it almost seems too much; but luckily the story is balanced by lighter moments, well-rounded characters and a few plot twists for the better. The author treats the subject of old age and dementia of a family member with sensitivity, humor, and understanding.

Grade school kids will identify with Logan's problems, especially 5th Graders, or those children whose families are dealing with the decline of an elderly loved one.

In Lost and Found, a boy figures out that a lost penguin is actually supposed to be with him. Jeffers continues the story of the boy and the penguin in Up and Down. In this story, the penguin decides that it is time for him to fly. The boy tries to help him, but in his excitement the penguin wanders away. Both the boy and the penguin miss one another but are reunited at a crucial time when a circus cannon, a helmet and a little friendship make dreams possible. This beautifully illustrated children's book is comical, endearing and the perfect read.

They find a cryptic note promising that each girl has a power and a gift that they must discover, which will aid in the search. The novel is packed with humor and adventure, and is just a little scary.

For those not yet ready for the Lemony Snicket series, this novel is perfect for second grade and up.

It's the summer of 1957 in Arkansas and 13 year old Ollie is the oldest of Reverend Love's five daughters. Ollie tries to imagine what it would be like to live in a house, instead of a traveling from one poor town to another in an old Chevy pickup truck and travel trailer, performing revivals at each stop. When Ollie walks into Binder, Arkansas with revival announcement flyers to pass around town, she notices a scraggly boy slinking along between trees and spying on her. She learns from some not so nice town's people that the boy, named Jimmy Koppel, has no mother or father to raise him because his mother is in jail for killing his father. Ollie is warned to stay away from Jimmy because nothing good has ever come from a Koppel. Ollie feels differently and begs her father to stay in town and right wrongs. This is a compelling story with full characters. Good luck putting this book down.

Sayle is donating a free Stormbreaker mega-computer to every school in Britain. But there is some underlying scheme connected with these Stormbreakers and Alex is sent to stop Sayle and his plans. After finding out the truth, Alex is in grave danger and must return to Britain to stop Sayle and save England. Will he succeed?

There are some additional characters both good and evil that Alex encounters during his mission. There is the evil publicist, Nadia Vole, and the disfigured mute, Mr. Grim, assisting Darius Sayle. There is Jack Starbright and Sabina Pleasure helping Alex. Both Jack and Sabina are recurring characters in the other books of the series.

The storyline is simple and the good guy/bad guy characters are easily defined. The story is fast paced and the cliff-hanger chapters leave the book hard to put down. Readers will enjoy Alex and his many talents. He has a knack for finding trouble and numerous ways of escaping it. The book will leave the reader wanting to explore the next one and eventually reading all of the books in the series.

The recommended age level is for grades 5 through 9.

A good story to share with your preschooler. The watercolor illustrations are inviting and cozy, depicting an old-fashioned house with mice dressed in sweaters and slippers. I would recommend this book to any preschooler through first grade.

This charming and cheerful holiday book, published in 2003, is recommended by the Cooperative Children's Book Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Little Owen Block is finally old enough to be the "Official Candle Lighter" during the nights of Hanukkah. After lighting each candle, his Grandma Karen tells him a funny and heartwarming bedtime story. Many of the stories seem to be about the family members who later come to dinner on the eighth night of Hanukkah. Of course by then, readers will feel familiar with the whole family and understand the family's inside jokes told at the dinner table. At the end of the book, the author adds educational material about "The Hanukkah Legend", "Hanukah Blessing" and a glossary of terms.

I recommend this book for ages 5-9.

Perhaps it is because I love the outdoors, planting and gardening that this was among my favorite holiday books recommended by Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) in Madison, Wisconsin.

Wilma had gardened for years, but she wants to plant something new on her land. During the winter months, she decides to start a Christmas tree farm in the spring and begins planning. She will need some help with all the planting and she knows that Parker, the little boy next door, will help her. Readers will enjoy the seasonal changes as years pass by and delight in watching Parker grow as the trees grow from year to year. A note from the author in the back of the book tells readers how many years it takes to grow a Christmas tree.

I recommend this book for ages 4-7.

Young Liz is excited to be on her first hunting adventure with her dad who has just returned home from war; but she is also uneasy: her father has been gone so long that he and she are practically strangers. There are other things to get used to also: her new, too-large plaid flannel shirt from the dry goods store, the unfamiliarity of the breakfast fare on the menu at the diner, and the chilling changes that November brings to the woods Liz walks with her father, who, with gun in hand, is intent on killing the crows who have been eating the farm crops. Liz has been put in charge of luring the crows with a crow call whistle. It makes her sad to think that the crows will have to die, and she confides this and other feelings to her father as they make their way through to a hillside clearing. When the time comes for calling the crows, Liz is so delighted interacting with the birds that have gathered that her father holds his fire to share in her delight.

Based on a true happening from the author’s childhood, this story is set in 1945, but will be relevant to modern-day children whose parents return from service or other long-term absences and must form bonds again. The beautiful illustrations by Bagram Ibatoulline are rich in detail and atmosphere, with muted tones that reflect both the seasonal setting and the nostalgic tone of the narration.

In picture book format, this story would make a read-aloud at home or in a classroom, as well as a good selection for primary independent readers and up. Older adults may enjoy it, too, and it could serve to spark memories and stories of their own, to share in a family or other group setting.

This is really a unique book for James Patterson. It's not a graphic novel, by definition, but it is full of sketches and doodles that add a graphic novel quality to the book. This is a story about a boy named Rafe who is starting middle school and seems to only be noticed by the school bully, "Miller the Killer." After the first school assembly, Rafe makes a promise to break all the rules in the student handbook (without hurting anyone) by the end of the school year. While the story deals with some heavy issues, it does it with great humor and fun drawings along the way.

I highly recommend this book to students from grade 6-8. It's a great pick for reluctant readers too.

Contrary to popular myth, George Washington did not have wooden teeth. His dentures were formed from a lead plate and later, from hippopotamus ivory. They were held together with a strong spring, which made speech difficult but served to keep the dentures in his mouth. One denture consisted of ivory teeth. Another consisted of an upper plate of cow and horse teeth with a lower plate of human teeth. Familiar portraits did not depict Washington accurately and led to negative public opinion that his character was “stiff” and “grumpy” (p. 8). Expert scientists, historians, and craftsmen at Mount Vernon thoroughly researched how he looked in real life. His image was recreated in wax figures to represent him at the ages of 19, 45, and 57. This well-researched biography tells the fascinating story of how the work of French sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon, in 1785, used an actual plaster face cast of Washington at his home to create a bust and the life size statue that still stands in the state capitol building in Richmond, Virginia; this cast was used as a modern day model. Scanners were used to make 3-D computer images of the bust of Washington. An actual jawbone of a British soldier from the French and Indian War who was about the same size and age of Washington at 19 was used to create realistic images of how his profile would change with gradual loss of teeth. Anthropologists' knowledge of aging was used to age the images. Tailors and textile experts created realistic clothing for the time periods. An amazingly realistic figure of Washington at age 45, mounted on a replica of his horse Blueskin at Valley Forge, was one of the results. A striking biography for readers who love to tie history to modern times and learn exciting facts beyond the ordinary.

They are reunited with previous characters from the Percy Jackson series and learn that they are also demigods. Leo learns he is a son of Hephaestus, Piper is a daughter of Aphrodite, and Jason is a son of Zeus. They are recruited for a quest to free Hera, who has been imprisoned by Mother Earth. The heroes are plunged into exciting and dangerous adventures. Leo invents a flying fire breathing dragon robot that takes the three of them on their perilous journey. The journey takes them across the United States, meeting Cyclopes in Detroit, Medea in Chicago, and Midas in Omaha. The final battle takes place at the Wolves Den, former home of Jack London, in Sonoma, California.

The end of the book reveals the true identity of Jason and his link to Percy Jackson. It leads into the next book of the series where the Roman and Greek demigods must unite to provide the prophesied group of seven heroes. The heroes must defeat the giants along with the gods. Within this quest, Jason, Leo, and Annabeth, have to find the Roman camp and convince them to help.

The sequel released in October of 2011 is The Son of Neptune.

Readers will be unable to put this exciting adventure down. The age appropriateness for this series is 6th - 8th grade.

While following the Wargals they discover that a large bridge is being built across the Fissure for Morgarath’s warriors to cross. Thus the King’s army will be trapped. During the battle that takes place, Will and Evanlyn are captured by a group of Skandians, ruled by Jarl Erak, who were helping Morgarath.

There are some surprising twists to the story and the capture of Will and Evanlyn, and the escape of the Skandians lead into the third book of the series, The Icebound Land.

Again fantasy readers will enjoy reading the continuation of the saga of the Ranger’s Apprentice and will become hooked on reading the rest of the books in the series.

Bean store. He avoids authorities for fear they will permanently separate him from his mom. His passion for elephants sustains him as he steals a small elephant figurine for comfort, ponders elephant words of wisdom, and seeks to view a very special elephant. Each chapter begins with an elephant fact. “It was once assumed that all elephants in a group were related. But not so. In this fantasy, eleven-year-old Gregor and his two-year-old sister, Boots, fall into an amazing underground world underneath New York City. This Underland is populated with humans and various giant-sized talking creatures. These creatures include bats called “fliers”, cockroaches called “crawlers”, spiders called “spinners”, and rats called “gnawers.” They have all lived in harmony but “The Prophecy of Gray” has changed that existence. The prophecy states that Gregor may be the “overlander” destined to save the humans from the warlike rats. Gregor is more interested in finding his way home, until he discovers that fulfilling the prophecy might also mean finding his father. Thus there are two quests unfolding in this story. One is that the Underlanders must fulfill the Prophecy of Gray and prevent being annihilated by the rats. The other is Gregor’s quest to find his father and bring him home.

Eventually the reluctant Gregor is transformed into a warrior hero who leads a successful battle against the army of invading rats. The quest begins with a band of rescuers consisting of two overlanders: Gregor and his sister; two underlanders of royal descent: Luxa and Henry; two flyers: Aurora and Ares; two crawlers: Temp and Tick, and one rat: Ripred. Once the quest begins, the events happen very quickly and they are faced with many challenges to conquer. The ending leads right into the next book in the series, “Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane.”

Fantasy readers will enjoy this tale and will be anxious to continue reading the other five books in the series.

Julie lives with Dad & Papa Dad, and Bad Cat, she is good at drawing and wishes she could fly. Lydia and Julie have one year before Junior High starts. They devise a plan to observe the girls that are already popular and record their observations in a book. By the end of the year they will use the same tactics to become popular so that more people will like them, they will stop getting teased, they will get invited to cool parties, other people will be jealous of them, and they will get better parts in the school play. Unfortunately, making these observations is easier said than done. The girls observe that the popular girls have dyed hair so they decide to dye Lydia's hair, which ends with a disastrous bald patch. Then Lydia & Julie realize that they need cell phones to be popular. They scheme and in the end they do get a cell phone but the screen doesn't work, the number pad is worn off, and the phone is kept together with duct tape. The girls continue to observe and scheme until Lydia and Julie are no longer talking to one another. The girls eventually patch things up so that The Popularity Papers can continue. The book is written in diary form complete with hand written text and illustrations.

Living out of a car with her mother and little brother while her mother works two jobs makes Georgina think about what she can do to help the situation. She comes up with a wild idea to steal a dog and claim reward money after the owner posts reward signs for the lost dog. As the story unfolds, Georgina and the reader grow fond of a mysterious man named Mookie, an old woman named Carmella, and a little dog named Willy. Sometimes, the best lessons happen in the worst of times. Although the topic is sad, the story is told in a loving way that keeps the reader engaged throughout.

I recommend it for both boys and girls, grades 5-7.

The first book of the ten book series follows the adventures of Will, an orphan who becomes an apprentice Ranger under the famous Ranger Halt. The story takes place in a fictional world based on European, medieval times. It deals with the training and education of Will in the skills needed to be a protector of the Kingdom. Will learns from Halt the many skills needed to become a Ranger, including how to become invisible and an expert in the use of weapons, especially the short knife and the bow and arrow. At the Gathering, a Ranger meeting where Will’s skills are tested, the Rangers receive a message that a band of creatures called the Kalkara have killed some important Arluen people. The Kalkara, led by Morgarath, Lord of the Mountains of Rain and Night, are bound to take revenge on the kingdom of Araluen. Halt, Will, and Will’s friend, Horace from Battleschool, join together to defeat the Kalkara.

There is one major theme and two underlying plots that unfold throughout the book. The major theme is one of good-versus-evil. The other two themes include the introduction of Will’s rival battleschool apprentice, Horace, and the identity of his father.

The book is full of adventure, storytelling, magic, and extensive characterization. Any fantasy reader will enjoy the story and will want to read the additional books in the series. The next book in the series is “The Burning Bridge.”

A story told from the animal's point of view, a female gopher snake is captured by a "filthy, fleshy human child" named Gunnar. The boy calls the snake "Crusher," and puts his new "pet" in a terrarium in his bedroom, next to cages occupied by wild animals that Gunnar has captured but since lost interest in. While looking for her chance to escape, Crusher observes Gunnar and his habits, his family, friends, and his love of video games. She also finds she can communicate with the other captive animals through telepathy, and even befriends a mouse which Gunnar calls "Breakfast." Her plan to escape becomes more complicated when she realizes that she's begun to care about her fellow creatures, including Gunnar. Will she ever regain her freedom? Or is she turning into a true pet? Crusher's commentary on human nature is full of wry humor and food for thought, and facts about snakes are woven well into the plot.

Wordless picture books are among my favorites. This Caldecott Honor book is a beautifully illustrated story about a "grey lady" who is carrying strawberries home from the market when she discovers that she is being followed by "the strawberry snatcher". The grey lady knows that she is being followed and she is very good at hiding by blending into her environment. Pictorial storytelling is a great literacy builder because it teaches children to look for clues to comprehension in not only the text, but in the pictures as well. Have fun with this one! You may have to study the pictures for a while to get all the clues
